The implementation and use of the University Computer Aided Design and Drafting/Geographical Information System (CADD/GIS) system is discussed. The CADD/GIS system is a multipurpose system whose function includes management of campus utilities, university grounds management, and facilities planning and space management. Implementation of this project has been a major task in that the campus of Michigan State University serves over 40,000 students with 10,000 faculty and staff, and consists of 5,239 acres of land, over 7,000 kinds of trees, shrubs, and vines, and 17 colleges with 231 departments distributed over 703 buildings. All must be managed using the CADD/GIS system. This paper will review our experiences in the implementation of a distributed CADD/GIS system, evaluate the methods used, and outline our future course.
