ABSTRACT
In this paper, we examine the current state of transport layer protocols for mobile ad hoc networks. TCP for wired networks offers poor performance in wireless settings because of its inability to distinguish packet loss due to congestion from packet loss due to bit errors or path change. To remedy this problem, many suggestions have been made for improvements to TCP as well as completely new transport layer protocols designed specifically for use in ad hoc environments. The use of a thin layer between the transport and network layers is also considered. This paper provides an objective look at many of these improvements and offers feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of each.
