ABSTRACT

On the basis of anatomical explorations reported over sixty years ago, a rather complete block diagram of the “wiring” of the brain may be drawn. Unfortunately the function or mode of operation of many of the blocks are poorly understood even though we have remarkably accurate pictures of the fine structure. Our task is to fit some hypothetical model of brain operation into the (admittedly incomplete) set of restraints which are formed by the known aspects of structure and performance.
