ABSTRACT
There are numerous advantages and disadvantages to the use of video in empirical research. In contrast, observation in conjunction with notetaking avoids some of the problems with video, but without providing many of the advantages. Rather than report on the results of empirical studies, this paper examines methodologies used to capture and record the results of experiments which were designed to better understand how users interact with a system and how to design systems to meet user's needs.
