ABSTRACT

Diagnosis of mechanical systems is seen as a mature role for systems incorporating those aspects of Artificial Intelligence usually referred to as “Expert Systems”. A project to produce a concept demonstration of an expert advisor for troubleshooting an aircraft gas turbine engine has been completed using available technology. This reinforces the impression that deployment of such systems in operational use is now possible. The task of verifying the diagnosis of such systems is still not completely solved but the concept demonstration system has been used to develop some methods of defining such verification.
