ABSTRACT

With “The Year of the LAN” turning into the “Decade of the LAN” it is about time that the facts were presented in a concise, logical, and understandable manner. The plethora of documentation on LANs (Local Area Networks) and data communication is enough to baffle the mind. It is the purpose of this paper to set forth clearly the latest developments in the LAN industry. Criteria and guidelines for selecting optimal network configurations will be discussed, and examples will be given.
