Information Agency. An excellent starting point, even if a bit dated, is the July, 1994 special issue of Communications. Many of the key players in the field contributed to this issue. Another useful overview is Fah-Chun Cheong's Internet Agents: Spiders, Wanderers, Brokers, and Bots (New Riders, 1996).
