ABSTRACT

The GNAT project at New York University is building a high-quality Ada 9X compiler, to be distributed free and with sources, following the successful mechanisms established by the Free Software Foundation for the GCC compiler. This paper describes the design of a smart recompilation system that is currently being implemented on top of the GNAT compiler. The foundations upon which smart GNAT rests are also the starting point for software engineering tools such as a source browser, a cross referencer and an intelligent Ada make.
