ABSTRACT

The perimeter does not go away, it just shrinks to individual hosts. Traditional perimeter security tools such as firewalls, IDS and IPS now migrate to the host, but change along the way. Techniques such as deep packet inspection in particular benefit from Moore's law to a greater extent than other security mechanisms, and will play an increasingly important role in host based security going forward.

This talk describes host based IPS progress, and compares and contrasts some of the newer options now available. Deep Packet Inspection technology is discussed in more detail with examples to illustrate how it efficiently shields software vulnerabilities from both known and unknown malware.
