ABSTRACT
In past decades, paper-based assessment systems have been used to evaluate student learning outcomes through graded assignments and tests. However, without a systematic and accurate categorization of test knowledge levels, these commonly used systems are limited in scope. A simple test grade does not reveal an understanding of learning outcomes or allow us to determine if students are attaining our course goals. In addition, paper-based systems are complex and do not provide immediate feedback for personalized assessment or improvement of teaching practices. In this paper, we present a novel Web-based Educational System (WEAS) that will solve these problems by applying Bloom's taxonomy theory to an evaluation of student learning outcomes and teacher instructional practices with immediate feedback. Applying the system to science courses at a local high school has produced encouraging results.
