ABSTRACT

The following paper describes the effects that Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA) will have on Voice over Internet Protocol technology (VoIP). There are several limiting factors that if CALEA is applied to VoIP will severely alter the way VoIP functions. Traditional telephony and VoIP have fundamentally different technology. While it was a financial set back to carriers when CALEA was inacted it was not detrimental. VoIP on the other hand will have some severe issues in the compliance of CALEA.
