ABSTRACT
Ad hoc networks heavily rely on simulations to develop and test new protocols or applications. Impact of radio propagation models is often neglected. Simulated losses consequently exhibit relatively simple behaviors whereas they are in reality tied to obstacles, mobility and external interference sources. Moreover, the way losses do appear in multi-hop ad hoc networks has great and complex effects on upper layer protocols. Using characterization of losses in real world experimentations, we propose a propagation model called shadowing-pattern which aims at providing more reality-like losses. Finally we highlight the effects of our new model on multi-hop scenarios
