ABSTRACT

In this note details are given of three additions to the draft proposed ANS FORTRAN Standard published in SIGPLAN NOTICES, March 1976. These amendments were proposed by the members of IFIP Working Group 2.5 on Numerical Software and submitted to the X3J3 committee in July, 1976. We hope that this note will encourage interested parties to send for copies of the full specifications, consider the proposals and then communicate their reactions to the IFIP WG 2.5 committee and to the X3J3 committee. The objective of the proposals is to extend Standard FORTRAN to enhance the portability, adaptibility, ease of use and reliability of FORTRAN Software, without substantial impact upon the spirit and philosophy of the current proposed standard. This note gives a brief description of the proposals and their background. Separate documents detail the line-by-line changes to the Standard. Copies may be obtained by writing to NAG Central Office, 13 Banbury Road, OXFORD or Dr. J. C. T. Pool, Applied Mathematics Division, Argonne National Laboratory, 9700 South Cass Avenue, Argonne, Illinois 60439.
