ABSTRACT

Greetings and Happy New Year! At the beginning of our fourth year as co-editors of Data Base, we would like to briefly reflect on the past three years as well as articulate some of our vision for the coming year. As new editors in 2002, we concentrated largely on such operational challenges as building and maintaining an accurate submission and review information system, expediting the review process, and initiating some editorial board policy changes. While we still occasionally experience troubled review processes and aspire to further reduce delays in the process, we are pleased at the initial improvements that have been made. Fewer papers are sent to reviewers but greater numbers of papers that are sent to reviewers, are eventually accepted after revision. While the submission rate has remained relatively stable over the course of three years, the quality of the incoming submissions has increased. This has resulted in fewer articles being returned without a review process and fewer articles being returned for changes prior to a review process. We hope to continue this trend in 2005, with special attention to using the review process constructively. For those who have experienced lengthy review processes, we are mindful of the frustration this may engender and will do our best to chase down reviews in a timely fashion.
