What is a DOI?

ABSTRACT

It is now possible to turn almost any object into an interface. What one must do, however is to explore the user's needs and perceptions in order to create the metaphors necessary for improved interaction. We have created a group of applications allowing us to study the effects of different interfaces on user interaction and perception. The applications involve different user actions such as virtual reference, and different sensations such as tactile stimulus. The interfaces explored are tangible (virtual and augmented reality) and intangible (real virtuality). The interfaces were used in different situations (technical and art exhibits) and this context also affects user reaction. In this paper we describe the applications and the interfaces involved, as well as the reactions of users. We explore the issue of immersion and suspension of disbelief through spatial reference and tangibility.
